So on one of my many trips up to Salt Lake that I’ve been making due to my internship at Super Top Secret, I realized something quite strange about my psyche.
I’m a big proponent of the car pool lane and the double white lines. Some may say it even borders on neurotic. The thing is this, those double white lines are there for a reason. In California, it’s divided by a concrete median; here we have the double white lines. Either way, they should not be crossed. It's unethical to cross them. Have some integrity. I never cross them, I get angry when I see other people cross them and often set myself up positionally for a cross-block.
But to my point. There is a section coming from Pleasant Grove into American fork where the left lane turns into the car pool lane. As I have a need for speed, I often find myself in the far left lane and getting stuck there as the regular lane transitions to the carpool lane. I’m alone in my car. I have no passenger and no express pass, but there I am in the carpool lane, pooling no one in my car. I’m using it illegally…but there are those double white lines…the lines the can’t be crossed. So white, so double. So my rational (maybe irrational) belief that these lines should never, under any circumstance (aside from imminent death) be crossed, keeps me driving, stuck, in the carpool lane, until at last, I see the dotted white line appear, at which time I cross back into the regular flow of traffic and accelerate to 90+ mph and continue on along my way. What’s the matter with me?
